Instructions

You can use the calculator above to calculate your weighted grade average. The weights have been put in place, you simply need to enter a gpa (a value on a 4.0-scale) for the indicated items. Once you have entered your data, press the "calculate" button and your estimated course gpa in the results area (a number on a 4.0-scale which will be translated to a letter: A, A-, B+, B, B-, etc). That reported result includes a pctg. symbol, but it really is a gpa, not a percentage of anything.

If you want to calculate the average grade you need on your remaining assignments (or on your final exam) in order to get a certain grade in the class, enter the grade you would like to achieve. If this is the goal once all five items are accounted for, then leave the total weight at 100. (You can change this to a lesser number to correspond to a different stage---such as setting it to 72 to see the GPA you would need on items between now and the final exam (excluded) to reach the desired level.) Press either the “Calculate” button or the “Update” button and you will see your average grade for the class and the results will be displayed in the results area.

How to calculate weighted grade average?

  1. First multiply the grade received by the weight of the assignment. Repeat this for each completed assignment.
  2. Then add each of the calculated values from step 1 together.
  3. Next add the weight of all the completed assignments together.
  4. Finally, divide the calculated value from step 2 above by the value calculated from step 3. This gives you the weighted grade average.

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted Grade = (w1 x g1 + w2 x g2 + w3 x g3 + …) / (w1 + w2 + w3 + …)

Where:

w = weight

g = grade

Example Calculation

Here is an example. Let's say you received a 90% on your first assignment and it was worth 10% of the class grade. Then let's assume you took a test and received an 80% on it. The test was worth 20% of your grade.

To calculate your average grade, follow these steps:

  1. Multiply each grade by its weight. In this example, you currently have earned 89% of all homework points which you translate to a GPA of 3.4 on homework, worth 15% of your overall grade. So multiply 3.4 x 15 = 51. You earned an C+ on Test 1, translated as a GPA of 2.3, and as it is worth 19% of the class grade, you multiply 2.3 x 19 = 43.7.
  2. Add the calculated values from step 1 together. We now have 51 + 43.7 = 94.7.
  3. Add the weight of all included items together. In this case, the included items have weights 15% and 19%. That gives us a total (included) weight 15 + 19 = 34.
  4. Finally, divide the value from step 2 by the value from step 3. That gives us 94.7 / 34 = 2.79. Therefore our weighted GPA is 2.79.
